New gallery: Winter Landscapes from Helsinki 2013-2014

Full moon over Suomenlinna Church / Link to Winter Landscapes from Helsinki 2013-2014 gallery

Last winter was very short in Helsinki. Some people complained that there was hardly any in winter in Helsinki. I like to photograph winter landscapes in Helsinki when the sea is freezing, and the sea did froze in January. There were 10 days that were very photogenic 🙂 So from the photography point of view, I’m satisfied with the last winter.

My best photos from last winter are in this Winter Landscapes from Helsinki 2013-2014 gallery. The photo locations in Helsinki that are included to this gallery are: Lauttasaari, Suomenlinna, Kallahdenniemi, Uutela and Market Square / South Harbour. During this winter I was teaching again in Kameraseura‘s advanced landscape photography course. We had 12+ field trips during the winter, so many photos are from these course trips.

New gallery: Summer Views from Helsinki 2013

Helsinki Cathedral from Valkosaari / Link to Summer Views from Helsinki 2013 gallery

Summer is over, so it is time to post a new gallery of photos that I have photographed in Helsinki during summer 2013. During earlier summers I have been little bit lazy to photograph urban sunsets in Helsinki, so this year I decided to take my camera and tripod more often with me to Helsinki nights. I managed to photograph the sun setting exactly behind the Helsinki Cathedral, and the moon exactly behind the Suomenlinna Church 🙂 Unfortunately the moon was not full, but it is good to have some challenge also next summer… You can see some of these photos in my exhibitions during next months: in Art Forum Helsinki in October and in Kaken Kehys in November.

New gallery: Winter Landscapes from Lapland and Kuusamo 2013

Riisitunturi National Park, Posio, Finland

Link to Winter Landscapes from Lapland and Kuusamo 2013 gallery

I visited Kuusamo at the end of February. I stayed in Kuusamo eight days: First five days I was teaching at the winter landscape photography course arranged by Kuusamo-opisto. The last three days I photographed according to my own schedule.

It was not very cold, so the rapids were not very photogenic, but the Riisitunturi and Konttainen had excellent snow in trees (“tykkylumi” in Finnish). So during these eight days, I photographed mostly “tykkylumi”. I climbed to three times both to the top of Konttainen and Riisitunturi fells. Other places that I visited were: Ruka Peak, Myllykoski, Käylänkoski, and Kiveskoski. Full moon was visible during my last day, and I went to Riisitunturi to photograph it. The last four photos in the gallery are photographed in the moonlight at the top Riisitunturi 🙂

A new iPhone application for Tilt and Shift lens users

Lauttasaari, Helsinki / Taken with Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L

Lauttasaari, Helsinki / Taken with Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L and the plane of focus aligned with the ground

Tilt and Shift lenses are special lenses for landscape and architecture photography. I’m e.g. using Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L and Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5 L II lenses. The T/S lenses allow adjusting the plane of focus quite freely. The plane of focus does not need to aligned with the sensor plane, you can set it even perpendicular to the sensor plane. This can be used e.g. to align the plane of focus with the ground level. This is a good tutorial about T/S lenses.

All T/S lenses are manual focus lenses, and if you use the tilt feature, the focusing (e.g. aligning focus plane with ground) can be tricky. There are some pre-calculated tables (link to pdf table) that tell you the needed tilt based on camera height and focal length. You can also focus the T/S lenses without any aids, just by iteratively adjusting the lens tilt and focus. But that can be time consuming.

Tilt Calculator with manual body tilt (body is level)

Tilt Calculator with manual body tilt (body is level)

Guillaume Sébire, a friend of mine, has made Tilt Calculator application to iPhone (link to iTunes) to determine the needed tilt. You input the focal length, camera height to the ground (or to be precise the hinge line distance, see the last image), and camera body tilt to the application (I’m not using focus distance input). Based on this information the application calculates the needed tilt and focus distance. It has even automatic body tilt measurement: you just align your iPhone to your camera body (e.g. put the iPhone against the LCD display), and application measures the body tilt automatically (see image below).

Landscape photography course in Helsinki on 4.-6.5.2012

Mustavuori, Helsinki

Mustavuori, Helsinki (29.4.2011)

I’ll teaching landscape photography in Kameraseura after two weeks. There are still several places available in the course. You can buy the course from the Kameraseura web shop. The teaching language of the course is English and the material will be in English. The material is also available in Finnish by request (contact me in advance). Course is suitable for beginners and advanced photographers. Here you can find a short summary from my spring 2011 photography course.

The main emphasis of the course will be on the art of landscape photography (choosing location, right time, composition, use of light, camera settings, what lens and filters to use,…). But I will also go through the landscape photographer’s equipment (camera, lenses, Tilt/Shift lenses, tripod, panorama accessories,…). I will shortly describe my work flow and how I process my photos with Lightroom and Photoshop. All participants will also get feedback based on the their images capture before and during the course.

The course timetable differs from the earlier Finnish courses as the Sunday part is only in the evening. But as we do not have one hour lunch break on Sunday and Friday evening is little bit longer, this course is only half an hour shorter than the Finnish courses. And you have more time to select and edit your photos from Saturday to the Sundays discussion.
